Obsession
Jason turned a manilla envelope around in his hands. Exspiravit had finally delivered on the second part of his obligation. He knew getting Bridget back wouldn’t be easy. She could be decidedly intractable, especially when second guessing what, in her heart, she knew to be correct. When she looked at him, he saw the all too familiar tincture of fear in her eyes.
If history had taught him anything, it was that, for Bridget, there was a point of no return — where she listened to the worst imaginings that floated into her head; and despite all evidence to the contrary, she believed them. Even when the truth told a different story; it could be staring her right in the face, and she’d call it an illusion. For Bridget, Jason was the truth; everything else was a lie — if only she’d realize that on her own. Then he wouldn’t have to go to such lengths to make her see it.
Bridget’s dilemma was that she wanted unconditional devotion in exchange for her love. It was the best and worst thing about her: she was fervently stubborn in her commitments and cold in her castoffs. In that way, they were of one mind. That’s why he understood her so well. When Jason showed his devotion to be less than absolute, he became another casualty of her dichotomous mindset. He’d hurt her, and she was slow to forgive, and even slower to trust him again. That how he knew seeing her wouldn’t be enough. And why he’d planned a contingency to their meeting.
Sometimes he wondered what it was about Bridget that propelled him to seek her out, to pursue her until her place in his life was all but certain. Sure, she was beautiful, but that wasn’t enough. It never had been before. Over the years, he had his share of beautiful women. But he'd never desired anything beyond instant gratification.
In Bridget, he saw something unique. There was an innocence to her. She remained unsullied by the things that ruined women, that tarnished their souls and left them destitute in all the ways that mattered most. With other women, all he saw was a black hole, a bottomless abyss that would suck him in and lose him in the dark. Bridget was nothing like that. She was the light on a path that showed him the way; and he was eager to follow, where ever that path might lead.
He remembered the first time he saw Bridget. If ever he questioned the possibility of love at first sight, all trace of doubt vanished the moment he laid eyes on her. She thought their first meeting was when she landed a job at the ad agency. On that point, she was wrong. They’d met five months earlier. Only, she didn’t realize it.
It was a wintry February evening; he was sitting at a booth in a small Tacoma pizza parlor, scouring through the emails on his phone. He was on his way back from a marketing conference in Portland and decided to stop for a bite to eat, before heading into Seattle.
